that are going to continue until, well probably getting picked up about now. 95 northbound in virginia, seeing everybody moving well but the growing volume. back to you in the studio. >>> we're following a developing story out of northern california this morning where a massive fire ball is still burning out of control in the middle of a residential town in san bruno, a neighborhood south of san francisco. the massive explosion and fire ball destroyed more than 50 homes and killed at least one person. fire investigators say it appears to be a natural gas line explosion. dozens of people were injured and many more are still unaccounted for. this morning some neighbors are describing how they escaped the flames. >> i had trouble getting out, i had to -- car was -- i have a car in the driveway but it is burning already. this car was in the garage and able to get in it and i had to lift the garage door manually and jump in and ride out through the fire. and it kind of melted the tail lights a little bit. >> everyone who lives in the immediate area is being evacuated. the cause of the explosion is

to the plaza. these are trees llthat were partially grown in new york, i new jersey a pennsylvania and virginia, all locations with ties to what happened on 9/11. of course, this memorial will be built -- will be opened one year from today,n thene xton anniversary, and everyone is looking forward to that. people here w are leaving the ceremony are filled with emotion. many of them describe it as being very powerful each year, many family members tell us fewer and fewer families attend, but those who do sayhey do because they feel a need to be here. for others, it is far too painful an experience to repeat. but it is for many people here a ceremony that they would not want to miss in particula this year being no different. so once again, an interesting day to be sure to be a part of all this w we have a lot ahead us, fred, as you know. >> a lot of this in great contrast. apparently there will be some protests as well as demonstrations, those for and those against the islamic center that is proposed to be built just a few blocks away. a you'll be attending and covering those events as well, right

're right. i'm about 20 miles outside of washington, d.c. right now. virginia, a democratic state in 2008. president obama took it back, however, in 2009, t.j., we saw republicans take back the governorship. republicans are hoping to pick up a couple seats in this state in their quest for at least 39 seats. the number, t.j., that they need to take back the house of representatives. you're right i got to spend about a half hour with republican national committee chairman michael steele, t.j., as we grove out here, very interesting things to say to me. >> we have watched as this government has ignored the people. and has acted in a way in which they have dismissed, they have name called, and they have just put out of their minds what's important. what's important to america. well, guess what? we take the country back by firing pelosi. we take the country back by retiring harry reid. >> reporter: there you go. there's michael steele in washington, d.c. right before he left to head into virginia, t.j. let me tell you, a couple things he had to say to me on the way out here to fairfax, 20 mime

wright for the for that traffic. >> slowing in virginia and up to 66, slowing down on braddock road. the crew and checking out the ride. we had an earlier crash north of 66. the accident activity out of the way in the strike safety zone. all lanes are open as you work northbound on 495 and headed to tyson's corner and leaving 236 to 66 and 66 itself briefly and this is 234. again, as you work between 50 and 123 and after nuttily street to the beltway and 95 on the breaks -- brakes in woodbridge and 395 here with the lanes open and no problems to report as you work south capitol street at the douglas bridge and on 295, on the bridge, that is where we had a crash tieing up the right lane. the outer loop is slow, 95 to georgia, southbound 270 and not bad here in rockville. the top side, that is where we had delays at 109 and 118. that is a check of the fox 5 on- time traffic. >>> from california this morning, a fire ravaged a neighborhood in san bruno, south of san francisco. one death already attributed to the flames and it's because of a possible gas explosion. >> reporter: this mass

's focused on the middle >>class? >> right. you mention that tomorrow he's goining to be going to virginia sitting at a family's kitchen table, talk about kitchen table issues, household budgets, things of that that nature and trying to highlight the efforts the president has made over the last 18 mountains to get the economy back on track but it all happens in a potical context where democrats, the president's party, of course, in serious trouble, and this is the curtain week now on the campaign season. we saw the president kick it off last monday, labor day, at tha rally in milwaukee where he gave that political stemwinder of a speech taking republicans to tack, by all accounts, experts say the republicans have a chance of winning a majority in the house, a better than even chance and perhaps can even win in the senate. we've seen the president now focusing on the economy. and the curtain coming up here as congress returns after a long august break. here it is the second week after labor day. and they're coming back only for about four weeks before they go back out on the campaign trail

statewide elections we've had post-obama in massachusetts, virginia and new jersey. 50% decline in young people's vote. while many of them are disenchanted perhaps with president obama, i have to tell you, a lot of us older democrats are getting a little frustrated with the youngsters. this is a marathon race. yeah, they got their hopy changy guy in 2008. if they want to actually enact all that change, they have to stay in the game. >> david, from a republican perspective, do you think the gop would like to see more alan grayson? >> alan grayson is a big part of the problem, generally, with the country. he is really a talk radio figure more than a political figure. he is not somebody who is in congress to make legislation. obviously he can't work with anybody on the other side of the aisle, the way he talks. his strategy, it will work for him, is to become famous by being polarizing, to stand out, to become a symbol of the left for the left against the right. you can raise a lot of money that way. you can't accomplish anything. and that is part of the same disease that's consuming us all

them to the polls in virginia, or massachusetts. how is the president going to convince people do this one for me again. >> he says please. please come out and vote. it's interesting because i think the white house is trying to do two different things. on the one hand, you talk to political trat gist, and they say these are hand-to-hand combat races, local races, local issues. it's not going to be a referendum on barack obama but they are turning it into a referendum on barack obama because they probably believe he is the only one who can get these people out to vote. he has to give them a reason, candy. he has to give them a message. we were out in ohio and we interviewed democratic voters. you ask what's the message of this midterm election from the democrats, and they had no idea. so what the president is going to do is try and use this tax cut issue as a message and say, we want to make the tax cuts for the middle class permanent and the republicans are going to try to hold that hostage because they don't want to raise taxes on the wealthy. that's kind of the last-ditch effort
